Rahmi M Koc Industrial Museum, Istanbul

The Koç Museum workshop was formed to support the RMK Industrial Museum and now undertakes and provides a multi-discipline restoration and conservation service.

When Ian Clark joined the team in 1994 he introduced a standards review by implementing a bench-marking exercise of the in-store collection.

Industrial and engineering conservation was a very new concept in Turkey and the Koç Scientific and Cultural Foundation was instrumental in introducing and promoting museum and heritage best practice.

An integral and core element of establishing conservation and restoration best practice within the Koç Museum Workshop was the rolling out a “Back to Basics” practical skills review and learning programme.

The Marshall portable engine was selected from the collection as an object which showcased the collective challenges to be found within industrial conservation and highlighted the skills required to sustain the museum as part of its future development.
