National Museums NI Industrial & Maritime Collections Condition Surveys

2 February 2021

The Cultural significance of National Museum NI industrial and maritime collections perfectly encapsulates the technological innovation and engineering human endeavour which helped shape and define the urban landscape and industries of Belfast and the wider rural communities of Northern Ireland.

When A new Executive Team was established in 2017 the process to recalibrate the collections began with the publication of a strategic review and report entitled ‘Unlocking the Potential of our National Collection’.

This ground-breaking report provides a positive pathway and includes future guidance for collections management.

Firmly embedded within this pathway are the industrial and maritime collections.

Ian Clark Restoration was invited to provide conservation collection care consultancy services to support this exciting strategy.

We provided on-the-ground conditions surveys and preliminary findings to support  the project conservation management plan and the interpretive strategies being developed for the long-term preservation of the industrial and maritime collections.
